What should I do about very suspicious neighbors?
I’m not sure what kind of forum to post this is but figured this comes in along the lines of "Home Defense".
Have 4 security camera’s around my property. Very untrusting of my neighbors due to some unusual things that have been happening since I moved in. First they were very friendly. Dropped by the house to say hello. Invited us over to BBQ’s every weekend and drink liquor. My wife and I aren’t big on alcohol and they (virtually ever home owner on the street are related to each other, or have known each other for years and goes to these weekend meetings.) all carry a large beer belly. Eventually we stopped going.
Due to me leaving on business trips and my wife being home alone for 1-3 weeks at a time I decided to set up some motion detection security camera’s that send an alart to my cellphone when they are triggered at certain times of the day. One is placed directly on my porch where people walk through the door. As I was installing it the old lady across the street (was watching her out of the corner of my eye) digs through my mail box and puts a letter in her pocket then walks up to me. She claims, "Oh this letter was put in my mailbox by mistake. here you go." while leaning over and very obviously looking at what it is that I am doing.
Then that night I am running my husky down the road. A few neighbors are sitting on their porch drinking(This is down the street from where my house is at.) A lady calls out, "Hey nice porch." I ignore her and keep going. Then she says, "Yeah, Your welcome." I have no idea what this means.
Other strange things happen. The landlord’s repair guy comes in to redo the window on our bathroom. He is absolutely terrified of dogs so I put my husky in the backyard. It’s cold out there with the snow coming recently and I throw her bed right by the back sliding glass door. A couple of hours later the bed has moved from the back door to the far end of the yard. It’s too big for her to of moved herself (and as is normal for that breed she flat out will not carry anything in her mouth.)
After he leaves I check my camera’s. There is a blind spot in my yard… And whatever moved the bed managed to move it exactly in the blind spot so I couldn’t see a thing. It also did it at a time when I could see him on camera.. But here’s the thing. He wasn’t in the backyard, nor working in the bathroom. At that time I was in the garage breaking down a bunch of sterafoam boxes…. and he was standing at the front of the house looking at me through where the garage door has little holes in it – talking on the cellphone to somebody. Then he walks to his truck and puts the phone away.
Okay now this morning. I take my wife to work at exactly 5:15 am. We always leave at exactly this time. At 5:20 the neighbors to our left pull out of his driveway to leave. 5:35 a old rusty pickup pulls in front of our house and parks right on the lawn. Then walks towards that same neighbors house. It stays there all day long. In the evening I leave to pick up my wife from work. When I get back varies from an half an hour to an hour max. Well, an hour and a half from the time we get back home… A car pulls up in our driveway with 4 people inside. 1 person gets out and heads to the truck and gets in. I can’t make out their faces but all 3 of them are looking at my house. The guy in the truck is definitely different than who got out that morning. Both vehicles quickly speed away down the road.
This has happened once before too a couple of months ago. But with a different truck. And I didn’t have camera’s back then. The truck is sitting there when I am getting back from dropping my wife off. A man’s in the driver seat. I go in then look through my window. He drives away within seconds of me being home.
There are plenty of other events I haven’t mentioned but are equally strange, I’m sure you get the general idea by now. I’ve never personally owned a gun before. There is this .50 caliber Magnum that caught my eye at the pawn shop. Tomorrow morning I’ll be picking it up and sign up for the classes so I can carry.
What kind of assumptions would you have if this happened to you – and what would you do?
First of all if you have never owned a gun before, a .50 cal Mag is not a very good choice, unless you are trying to break your wrist. A shotgun is best for home defense. I would get a 9 mm or a .45 acp simi automatic. And I would move.
You have some F’d up neighbors, I would invest in home defense if you plan on staying. I dont think just a gun will cut it. They are definitely scoping out your home security, I would not let my dog get friendly with any of them, dogs are the best warning system.
the woman who said ‘Hey nice porch’ said hey nice pooch.she was complimenting your dog.
as for what the truck is doing how about asking them? or your neighbor.
i think you are a little paranoid and need to make an effort to get on with your neighbors.
they may not be your type of people but being freindly wont hurt.
i don’t like my neighbors either they are winging uneducated scumbags but i am always friendly and tolerant towards them.
all you guys suggesting he prepares for war are showing a typical american view of the world.
wtf is wrong with you? living in the USA sounds like a delusional paranoid nightmare where everyone is out to get you.
this story is bullsh!t, go back to screwing your mama, a$$hat
You live in the wrong type of community move to a city where there are apartments and nosy neighbours never exist.
I wouldn’t let that repair guy near my house again
While this may all seem like very bizarre behavior to you…it can all be explained away with one word…paranoid…and I mean you. Regarding the old lady at your mailbox…what could have happened was that she was going to put the mis-delivered letter in your mailbox (which is what you took to be "digging through it), but thought better of it and decided it might be more neighborly to just bring it to you, since you were right there on your front porch. I also agree with the other answerer who suggested that the woman said "Nice POOCH"…not nice PORCH. As for the other stuff, from the sound of it, things have been going on for months…and yet nothing has actually happened. What you, my friend, are witnessing…is called people simply living their lives. Maybe you should try it sometime.
I know the exact feeling, man. I can completely relate to you. Our house was broken into a couple of years ago, and I felt completely distraught and violated. Just knowing that someone’s been watching your movements and has been on your property without your permission is distressing enough.
There’s a few things that I would do if I were you. A top priority firstly, would be to visit your local police station. Not because any serious laws have been breached (yet) but because if anything DOES ever happen, they’ll know about it and things will look slightly better on your behalf.
Guns are also something my family have always been interested in. We have a variety of 13 rifles/shotguns in our home, but they’re solely for hunting (strict gun laws within the UK). However, I can really say that I feel safer having a few firearms in the house, very reassuring especially in strange circumstances! Not sure on what the laws are in your country but I’d advise buying that pistol!
Another good thing to do would be to contact your close friends/family in the area. Let them know that there’s suspicious activity going on and if your parents are retired, have them drive past the house while you’re at work a couple times a week!
As for the truck, get its registration number! That’s your property and it certainly shouldn’t be parked on your lawn! Why it’s there, I don’t know. This may be just me and I don’t know how you feel about this, but I’ve been like this since my break-in. I always like to have something on hand just in case. When I’m driving around I keep my car jack in the back seat, when I sleep I’ve got my switchblade and baseball bat at arm’s reach. Maybe it’s a little too far fetched but I like to stay vigilant.
Anyway man, I don’t usually reply to people in this much detail but I could really relate to this one. As it’s late and I’m going to bed, I’m not going to read over it for spelling/grammar mistakes as I’m too shattered. But best of luck in sorting out your rat infestation! Take it easy and be safe!

It’s strange and scary, especially with your wife being at home alone due to your trips. I’d rather move to a small but secure apartment.
I would move and fast!
I think you need to stop smoken that indo because your extremely paranoid!!
I was going to suggest a gun but you are already getting one. I would also keep a long range shotgun in the house.
Man that’s just creepy I don’t even know what to say other than MOVE !!! I would just drop everything and move don’t wait too long cause who knows what they r planing they seem to drink alot and all kind of trouble goes through your head when your drunk!
I would set up Claymore around my house, which you could buy at Walmart. And hire merceneries.
Good trolls keep their b.s. stories short.
Good call getting the gun I personally would get my wife a small .22 to have on her and one for the bedroom too (I’m not for guns but from what I just read I sure as heck would have one with me if I were you). I would get a fantastic alarm system for my house, and another camera for that blind spot in your yard. If you have some money I would also get those unbreakable windows. I would invest in some blinds so no one could see into my house. And I personally would be extremely freaked out, I mean that’s weird that they are like that. If someone tried something to your house ( if he was a male) I’d beat the shit out of him, than you are establishing yourself as a force that isn’t afraid to fight to defend his family. Be careful and catious, best of luck to tou
Your situation sounds like the beginning of a horror movie. I dont know what to tell you.
