If I purchase a Tivo or DirectTV DVR, can I record images from a surveillance camera?

I do not have (nor do I plan to obtain) a subscription to Tivo, DirectTV or any other cable or satellite service. However, I was wondering if I could still purchase a DVR for the purpose of recording surveillance images at my home. I can record images to VCR but the strict limitation on the number of hours that can be recorded is inconvenient. Any other neat tips would be great too. Like, can I also connect a motion detector to the camera (which is wireless, by the way) so that it’s not running when there is no activity in the area?

I need an outdoor security camera to watch my back yard?

I’m looking for something that’s less than 0, that will monitor my back yard, ideally something wireless. I would like something that can stream to a computer, so wireless b/g is needed. Also, I would prefer something that was able to take decent images at dusk, because one of the concerns I have are deer eating at my garden. I don’t want to have to buy a 24hr VCR, or any other equipment, but streaming to a hard drive is no issue.

If possible I’d like something that was motion activated, so that I don’t have to sit through 12 hours of video every time a deer eats something.

Also, any software recommendations for this would be appreciated.
How much will I need to spend?
Those seem like a little bit of overkill. I don’t need super high quality footage. Just good enough to see where the deer are coming from, and which way the person who keeps stealing my humane squirrel traps comes from.

I don’t want to go buy a VCR and record it onto tape. Is there a way to record the video directly to my computer…i.e. a program that will record from the camera?

Know a lot about Security Systems? Please read & tell me which you think is best for recording?

I basically need a "nanny cam" to record (motion activated) activity in my bedroom, when I’m not home. Things are getting stolen. It has to be not noticeable. I’ve been looking into it. Is it better (as far the recording of the action) to get a USB DVR (just plugs into PC), a portable DVR or a DVR PCI Card? I can’t have one that plugs into my VCR for 1) I record shows while I’m @ work & 2), it would be noticeable if my VCR cut on when someone walked into the room. There are so many options. Is it better to get it separate or something that already has everything needed? I need a pinhole or covert camera that motion activated & can record on something other than my VCR. Color & audio would be a plus, but not necessary. I’ve reasearched till my head hurts, but I’m still no expert & want to make the right decision. Thanks!
