DIY security camera–help?

I would like to build a cheap DIY security camera. there has been an increase in crime (vehicle break-ins, etc.) in the past few weeks in my neighborhood. I want build a security camera system to keep watch over my truck at night. I would like it to have the following features:
—motion detection or manual start (motion detection would be the ideal case but manual start seems to be alot simpler and cheaper)
—long record time (bare minimum of 5 hours)
—good quality in low light setting
—store on to a usb flashdrive or sd card (mainly just want to store and/or watch the videos if necessary)
—relatively small if possible

the cheaper and simpler the better. I dont necessarily have a budget but would like to keep it halfway cheap. any tips, comments, videos, links would be greatly appreciated! thanks to all!
Hey guys thanks a lot for your input! it is greatly appreciated! i think i am going to go the webcam route. but the location i will be putting the camera will be about 100 or so yards from my computer. i looked into wireless transmitter/recievers but the good sets were pretty expensive. i also looked into wireless webcams but idk if they will reach that distance? maybe with a patch antenna of some sort? and is there any possible way to interface the webcam to store its videos to a usb flash drive or sd card? thanks again guys i really appreciate it!

What should I do about very suspicious neighbors?

I’m not sure what kind of forum to post this is but figured this comes in along the lines of "Home Defense".

Have 4 security camera’s around my property. Very untrusting of my neighbors due to some unusual things that have been happening since I moved in. First they were very friendly. Dropped by the house to say hello. Invited us over to BBQ’s every weekend and drink liquor. My wife and I aren’t big on alcohol and they (virtually ever home owner on the street are related to each other, or have known each other for years and goes to these weekend meetings.) all carry a large beer belly. Eventually we stopped going.

Due to me leaving on business trips and my wife being home alone for 1-3 weeks at a time I decided to set up some motion detection security camera’s that send an alart to my cellphone when they are triggered at certain times of the day. One is placed directly on my porch where people walk through the door. As I was installing it the old lady across the street (was watching her out of the corner of my eye) digs through my mail box and puts a letter in her pocket then walks up to me. She claims, "Oh this letter was put in my mailbox by mistake. here you go." while leaning over and very obviously looking at what it is that I am doing.

Then that night I am running my husky down the road. A few neighbors are sitting on their porch drinking(This is down the street from where my house is at.) A lady calls out, "Hey nice porch." I ignore her and keep going. Then she says, "Yeah, Your welcome." I have no idea what this means.

Other strange things happen. The landlord’s repair guy comes in to redo the window on our bathroom. He is absolutely terrified of dogs so I put my husky in the backyard. It’s cold out there with the snow coming recently and I throw her bed right by the back sliding glass door. A couple of hours later the bed has moved from the back door to the far end of the yard. It’s too big for her to of moved herself (and as is normal for that breed she flat out will not carry anything in her mouth.)

After he leaves I check my camera’s. There is a blind spot in my yard… And whatever moved the bed managed to move it exactly in the blind spot so I couldn’t see a thing. It also did it at a time when I could see him on camera.. But here’s the thing. He wasn’t in the backyard, nor working in the bathroom. At that time I was in the garage breaking down a bunch of sterafoam boxes…. and he was standing at the front of the house looking at me through where the garage door has little holes in it – talking on the cellphone to somebody. Then he walks to his truck and puts the phone away.

Okay now this morning. I take my wife to work at exactly 5:15 am. We always leave at exactly this time. At 5:20 the neighbors to our left pull out of his driveway to leave. 5:35 a old rusty pickup pulls in front of our house and parks right on the lawn. Then walks towards that same neighbors house. It stays there all day long. In the evening I leave to pick up my wife from work. When I get back varies from an half an hour to an hour max. Well, an hour and a half from the time we get back home… A car pulls up in our driveway with 4 people inside. 1 person gets out and heads to the truck and gets in. I can’t make out their faces but all 3 of them are looking at my house. The guy in the truck is definitely different than who got out that morning. Both vehicles quickly speed away down the road.

This has happened once before too a couple of months ago. But with a different truck. And I didn’t have camera’s back then. The truck is sitting there when I am getting back from dropping my wife off. A man’s in the driver seat. I go in then look through my window. He drives away within seconds of me being home.

There are plenty of other events I haven’t mentioned but are equally strange, I’m sure you get the general idea by now. I’ve never personally owned a gun before. There is this .50 caliber Magnum that caught my eye at the pawn shop. Tomorrow morning I’ll be picking it up and sign up for the classes so I can carry.

What kind of assumptions would you have if this happened to you – and what would you do?

Outdoor security cameras?

Hello looking for an outdoor security system for a farm. Would like a system that has around 4 cameras, must have night vision, and must be able to hook up to a computer that will store the images/video and ftp them to my server. Also motion detection is a must. Wireless is not a must as the building where the cameras will be placed will also store the computer.

Security Cameras -Wireless, DVR, Hold at least 5 cameras, Outdoor use?

Can I make my computer webcam into a motion-sensored cam?

I need a security camera so I wanted to use my webcam on my laptop to record a room when no one’s home, but I want it to ONLY start recording when motion is detected. Is there a program that I can download for free that uses my webcam to record using motion detection and captures a picture or video when motion is detected? It would be better if it could also have an option of sending the picture via email or phone to myself when it is taken, so I can know when to rush home. I have heard of programs that do this and more, but they are complicated and not free.

Additional info I don’t know if this matters but:
I’m using Windows Vista and I have a webcam built into my laptop (but there is no motion detection option.)
Please help this is urgent!! I will give 10 pts best answer!!

surveillance camera software ideas?

hi there. i’m currently developing a surveillance camera software as part of my school project.
currently, the software is able to control an ip camera’s movement and all the other basic stuff.
the software also acts as a security system, detection unwanted motion (ie. when shop is close).
it will then send an sms to the customer’s mobile and will also begin recording video footage.

is there any more innovative ideas that a surveillance camera software should or may have?
what’s lacking in softwares that currently out there?
or is there any other innovative usage for the camera, other than motion detection..

I would like to set up a home network security system, any suggestions?

I would like to install up to four cameras, connected to my home network. Has anybody put together a cheap DIY surveillance system in their houses? What did you do?

A few specifics:
- I would like to be able to record up to 24 hours of mid to high quality color video.
- I would like motion detection to trigger recording, and send an email alert.
- I have a few spare computers I can dedicate to monitoring/recording.
- Wireless would be great, but I can easily run my own ethernet cables, or rca cables.
- Sound is not necessary.
- I can set up complicated systems with no problem if it means saving a few bucks by not getting a fancy all-inclusive surveillance system.
- The ability to watch cameras remotely would be nice.
- I currently have a Linksys N wireless router.
