Which is better: HP or Sony Vaio laptops?

I need a laptop for school and I want it to last for all 4 years. First off, how much RAM, hard drive, etc. does a college student need? I’ve narrowed down my search of laptops to HP and Sony (don’t really like Dell or anything else).
